Yuba City experiencing air conditioning thefts

YUBA CITY, Calif. (AP) - Police in a Northern California city are asking for the public's help after a rash of air conditioning unit thefts.

Yuba City police say nine units have been stolen since January from homes, businesses and a church. The most recent theft was on Monday from a massage parlor.

The losses amount to more than $20,000.

Spokeswoman Shawna Pavey says investigators are hoping someone has spotted a unit being disconnected and comes forward. Police right now don't have any witnesses.

She says some of the thefts were not discovered until the victims tried to turn the units on recently.

Police declined to speculate on why the units were being taken. But according to the Marysville Appeal Democrat, authorities elsewhere say thieves sell copper rolls found inside the units.
