Auto Museum springs into action with Sunday drives, Hoods Up activities & special shop talks

The California Automobile Museum is springing into action with a variety of special programs, events and activities happening each month including Downtown Sunday Drives on the third Sunday each month, periodic Talking Shop events with special guests and Hoods Up Weekend activities at the end of each month. 

 

Downtown Sunday Drives

On the third Sunday each month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the California Automobile Museum offers drives to various places in downtown Sacramento in different vintage cars. These special drives are free with paid Museum admissions (donations are always welcomed).

In partnership with California State Parks and Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park, Friends of Sutter’s Fort is excited to present a delicious and all-new “Tour by Chocolate” event on Saturday evening, May 12, 2018 at 6 p.m.  Fort visitors who participate in this inaugural walking tour will learn about the fascinating history of Sutter’s Fort and its interesting connections to chocolate, such as how it was used for medicinal purposes, the role it played in the Donner Party rescue, and more.

Meet people who fought for and against establishing many of our more familiar parks, such as William Land, Cesar Chavez, and Southside Parks. Learn the secret history of your favorite city parks, and hear various tales of misadventure and misfortune that happened within them.

Railroad Museum welcomes Front Street Animal Shelter special guests & furry friends

It’s All Aboard for Story Time! with Front Street Animal Shelter special guests and a couple of their furry friends on Monday, April 30, at 11 a.m. at the California State Railroad Museum. To the delight of young children, train enthusiasts and dog lovers alike, Manager Gina Knepp and Communications Director Bobby Mann will read the children’s book Owney, the Mail-Pouch Pooch written by Mona Kerby. The celebrity readers will be accompanied by a couple of kid-friendly furry friends sure to capture attention.

Old garden roses talk & tour

For three Sundays in a row, join Rosarian Anita Clevenger and others to learn everything you always wanted to know about heritage roses. The talks will include a fascinating lecture (topics below) and a lovely Sunday afternoon stroll through the internationally recognized Historic Rose Garden.

  • April 22: Graceful Tea, China and Noisette roses, favorites of the 19th century
  • April 29: Repeat-blooming Bourbon and Hybrid Perpetual roses
  • May 6: Once-blooming European roses (some dating from ancient times) – Albas, Gallicas, Centifolia, Damask, and Moss roses will be featured

Enjoy the beauty of this cemetery garden in full bloom while you learn about roses rarely seen today. The events are free but donations are gratefully accepted and help support rose garden operations. All talks start at 1:00 p.m.

Featuring wines hand-selected by Mario Ortiz (The Firehouse’s General Manager and Wine Director), the tasting will include Taittinger’s Champagne La Francaise and a small selection of Domaine Carneros Winery’s Brut and Rosé sparkling wines. Guests (age 21 and over) can mingle under the beautiful canopy of trees in Sacramento’s favorite outdoor courtyard while enjoying their wine with passed hors d’oeuvres.

Calling all trivia fans… Railroad Museum to present Off the Rails: Happy Hour & Trivia Nights

California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum & Foundation are excited to present a series of five after-hours, adult-only Off the Rails: Happy Hour & Trivia Night events that debut on April 28, 2018, and continue every second and fourth Saturday in May and June. With a dramatic backdrop filled with impressive full-size locomotives and interpretive exhibits, the special after-hour events will take place in the Museum’s historic Roundhouse. These limited-time evening events will include beer & wine (for guests ages 21 and over) and tasty finger foods for purchase, spirited team trivia contests and fantastic prizes such as train ride tickets, Museum admission passes, and donations from local businesses.

Midtown Association continues elevated efforts to find solutions for local homeless

Committed to fostering a center for culture, creativity and vibrancy in Sacramento’s urban core, the Midtown Association recently increased its already diligent efforts to connect those facing homelessness with much-needed services to get them off the streets and into stable supported living situations. During the month of March 2018, the Midtown Association added three additional layers to its suite of education, networking and outreach services that resulted in the placement of two previously homeless individuals in housing situations and the coordination of multiple networking successes that pave the way for future progress.

Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. Come walk through pathways covered in roses while you hear tales of love in years gone-by. Costumed docents and actors will tell about how couples met and how they died, and recount legends about roses, the symbol of love. Bring somebody you love, breathe in the perfume of the roses around you, and enjoy a lovely evening in our award-winning Historic Rose Garden in the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery. 1000 Broadway, Sacramento, CA 95818.

Activate your Asana…Midtown now offers fun & free yoga classes & First Friday Flow events

In partnership with Yoga Moves Us, the Midtown Association is pleased to present free MiYo yoga classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings now underway at Fremont Park (1515 Q Street) and free First Friday Flow yoga events on the first Friday of each month (starting on May 4) on the exterior grounds of Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (corner of 26th & L). All of these new yoga offerings are scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. on the dates offered through September 2018.
