Midtown offers exciting, eclectic & outdoors inspired art during Second Saturday

A center for culture, creativity and vibrancy, Midtown Sacramento is an exciting Second Saturday Art Walk destination where local art galleries and other participating businesses collaborate to host a popular evening open house each month. Midtown guests will enjoy viewing art exhibits, participating in hands-on activities, meeting local artists, sampling food and wine, listening to live music and more.

It’s All Aboard for Story Time! with special guest Charles Hurley, a talented and entertaining local musician, on Monday, July 16, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the California State Railroad Museum. To the delight of train enthusiasts, young children and the young at heart, Charles will read the children’s book Bob the Railway Dog: The True Story of an Adventurous Dog written by Corinne Fenton and illustrated by Andrew McLean. In addition to reading the true story about the wandering Australian railroad dog, Charles plans to entertain the young Story Time! guests with a sing-a-long song or two. With a high energy style designed to get audiences excited and engaged, Charles is an accomplished and versatile musician who tours the country – often at fairs and festivals – performing with bands that include the Rock Bottom Boys and The Amazing Hamonatras.

Sacramento Self-Help Housing, a charitable non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of homelessness in our region, is proud to announce the 16th Annual “Let Them Eat Cake” event in celebration of Bastille Day at Beatnik Studios (723 S Street in Sacramento) on Thursday evening, July 12, 2018, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Presented by Sutter Health, U.S. Bank and Winn Foundation along with Patrick Kennedy, Supervisor, District 2, and Sacramento City Councilmember Jay Schenirer, District 5, guests will indulge in a fun Bastille Day celebration showcasing outstanding local cuisine, wines, brews and beverages, cake tasting, upbeat music and more.

Not to fret, you can still be a tourist in your own town without having to leave the cemetery! “Visit” several of the city's museums by visiting the graves of those who founded or were otherwise involved in the city's museums and historic sites, from Sutter's Fort to the Crocker Art Museum to some lesser known institutions. Midtown Association offers two more free outdoor movie nights on walls of Sutter’s Fort

After a successful first-time film showing in June, two more Free Outdoor Movie Nights in Midtown are scheduled this summer on 2nd Saturdays in July and August, 2018.  As part of the first movie showing at the Fort, nearly 200 community members were on site to enjoy the free show. Offered in partnership with California State Parks and Friends of Sutter’s Fort, and proudly presented by Sutter Health, the movies will start at approximately 8:30 p.m. on the historic walls of Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (on the west side, corner of 26th & L Streets).

Continuing a popular series of interactive and fun “Hands on History” activities happening on the third Saturday each month, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park and Friends of Sutter’s Fort are proud to present a new and special summertime event -- “After Hours: An Evening Hands on History” on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 6 to 9 p.m.

 

As part of this new evening offering, Fort visitors will take a step back in time to the 1850s to participate in crowd-favorite pioneer fun and games such as marbles, the game of graces, and more. With summer in full swing, the Midtown Association (MA) is pleased to announce a variety of deliciously exciting offerings and special activities happening in July at the popular and thriving Midtown Farmers Market. Proudly sponsored by Sutter Health, the Midtown Farmers Market offers up to 90 farmer, grower and vendor booths bursting with fresh fruit, produce, and gourmet or locally made goods each week.  The year-round market takes place on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 20th Street from J Street to Kayak Alley.*
